Eric Carle Illustrated Children’s Books
Eric Carle is one of the most prolific children’s book author and illustrator around. My two-year-old toddler is a devoted fan.
Carle’s Mister Seahorse was the first book my son ever “read” aloud on his own page-by-page. A charming book with see-through cellophane pages of seaweed and other aquatic plants that cover hiding fish, we read the book at least three times a day for several weeks.
By the second week, my son was able to narrate the story without prompting using about half of the correct words. A tireless reader, he’d read the book to himself at least 10 times in row (I usually lost count because I’d fall asleep). And as he read, he sucked the saliva through his teeth in between phrases like “Fine job!” and “I do love you.” He even tried his best to twist his tongue around words like “delighted” and “tip-top”.
Every one of the Eric Carle books we have in our library has been revisited many times over. Our latest acquisition is Rooster’s Off To See The World featuring a rainbow colored rooster as he gathers a following of cats, frogs, turtles, and fish to travel around the world. It’s the perfect book for my son to practice counting and to be introduced to the concepts of addition and subtraction.
Many of Eric Carle’s books have gimmicks that are sure to please; from the flashing lights in The Very Lonely Firefly to the hole punches in the classic, The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Don’t be surprised if you see your child sitting in the middle of a circle of Eric Carle books happily reading on his or her own.
