Children’s CD’s for a A Musical Start
Music has been an integral part of my son’s life since he was born. At first, we tried playing our own collection of CD’s for him from Fat Boy Slim to Tim McGraw because we didn’t think we could stand listening to kiddy music all day long. We were obviously clueless about the wide variety of children’s music available.
Our friends opened our eyes by sending us the Baby Einstein series - Baby Mozart, Baby Beethoven, and Baby Bach. I have never heard classical music so charmingly rearranged in gentle tones. Lovely for both parents and baby.
When we began teaching him sign language around six months, the Wee Sing collection of classic children’s songs were fun to share with him. Most importantly, the accompanying booklet had all the lyrics and fingerplays so that we could act out every song.
As he grew older, our son started to enjoy watching The Wiggles on TV. As a way for him to get his Wiggles fix but still avoid having his eyes glued to the TV all day, we played Wiggles music CD’s instead. Most of the time, he actually seems to prefer listening to the music more than watching the DVD. And they’re lifesavers on long car rides.
I’m not sure what kind of music he’ll be listening to in his teen years, but I hope we’ve given him a good start.

We have several story CDs from Jim Weiss that my son and I both just LOVE. Mr. Weiss is an excellent storyteller. He manages to keep his audience totally enthralled without trippy sound effects. The CDs are well worth it, IMHO. They run US$13.45 per CD, but you get at least an hours’ worth of stories that will have everyone listening intently.

Ralph’s World CDs are a must:

They are great songs by a real musician. His goal was to write music that kids and parents would both enjoy, and he’s absolutely succeeded. Kids love this stuff, and every show I’ve been to has the whole family jamming along.
Plus, the dad in our family is a musician and can’t stand pre-canned synthensized music (Boooo Baby Einstein), and all of Ralph’s stuff is made with real musicians cutting real albums.

Thanks, Jen and Krissy for your great recommendations! I’m sure other parents would love to have some more unique CD’s in their collection.
And Krissy, booo back to you! We like our Baby Einstein. :P

I haven’t "fact checked" these songs, but there are enough of them for grown-up variety. The kids seem to enjoy them as well. My toddler loves the ones that have lyrics such as "beep beep" heh.

I’ve got the Baby eintsein series DVD, but Shuen does not like them. She found them a bit boring. Maybe Cds would be better..:)

Thanks, Qadira and Donna for the additional suggestions! It looks like I’m missing out on a lot.
Min Hui - Maybe Shuen is getting a little too old for the Baby Einstein DVD series. And she might also be getting too old for the Baby Einstein music CD’s as well. Maybe you’d like to try the other CD’s mentioned in the post and in the comments?

Good suggestions here…
Some other artists I like…Sue Schnitzer, Brady Rymer, Dr. Jean, Justin Roberts…there are a lot of great independent or small label artists for kids these days.
