Discovery Ball by Leap Frog

by Gayla McCord on May 18th, 2005

This interactive toy by Leap Frog was given to my son when he was 9 months old. At first, he didn’t pay it much attention but as he discovered the interesting sounds that came from it, it quickly became one of his favorite toys.

The Discovery Ball has 3 modes: music, letter names, and letter sounds. I credit the music mode to helping my son appreciate music. Even before he could walk, he learned to “dance”, as he swayed his body left and right, forward and backward in time to the tunes. Many months later, I again discovered how educational this toy could be. I heard my son imitating the letter sounds as he pressed the letters one by one! I was so surprised because we certainly haven’t taught him any phonics yet!

Other features that make this educational toy highly recommended include:

* It comes with a stand for stationary play for young babies. The ball may be removed (by adults) and rolled around by a toddler later.
* Its letter buttons help develop fine motor skills.
* The letter names mode helps introduce the alphabet.

I expect the Discovery Ball to continue to be one of my son’s favorite toys for many months to come.
