Directgov (UK) has some tips for parents who wish to support their 11 to 14-year-old child’s reading habits. They are as follows:
* encouraging your child to read magazines, comics and newspapers as well as books
* buying books for presents those that tie in to a favourite TV show, pop band or computer game are often a hit
* reading together try picking reading material on subjects you both like, such as a sports team, music group or holiday destination
* read the books or plays that your child is studying in school, like a Shakespeare play, and discuss what youve read with your child.
The article also reports that kids who get support and involvement from their parents in their education often “get higher marks in English and Maths, a better attitude toward learning, and more confidence in school and other areas of their lives.”

I’m not too impressed by their first two suggestions. Not that I don’t think kids should be enjoying themselves but most often, it’s easier to have a junk reading diet just as it is to have a junk eating diet.

Personally, I don’t mind junk too much (both the eating and reading variety :-)). When it comes to reading, I believe that in moderation, all types of reading materials can help shape the child’s intellect, emotion, behaviour, and personality. Of course, I’m not advocating the "really bad stuff"… But, reading an Archie comic book here and maybe an Olsen twins book there are OK, especially if it helps them find their way to reading other more substantial books and reading materials.
However, I do realise that ultimately, these things are left with every parent’s preferences/judgements. For example, I adore Harry Potter books and would recommend them highly, but I know some parents would never let their kids anywhere near them.
