Summer Reading for Kids
Tuesday, June 21st is the first day of summer. Most kids are probably on summer holidays now and are hopefully finding more time to read some fun books.
Kathy Henderson of Pioneer Press found some websites that have summer reading lists for kids. Here are a few that caught my eye (I’ve had to fix some of the links Henderson provides in her article):
- The Association for Library Services for Children at http://www.ala.org/ala/alsc/alscresources/summerreading/summerreading.htm features reading lists ranging from “Top Ten All-Time Classics” to “Coretta Scott King Award Books.”
- “Summer Reading Is Sweet” is found on the Reading Is Fundamental site at http://www.rif.org/readingplanet/. In addition to monthly reading calendars, its tips section offers “10 At Home Vacation Ideas” with suggestions such as “visit a historical site” and related books. Cookbooks, song lyrics and newspapers are part of the “10 Options for Reading Outside the Book.”
- A click on “The Reading Zone” at Kidspace on the Internet Public Library at http://www.ipl.org/kidspace/browse/rzn0000 brings stories online. Choose from classics, fables, fairytales, mysteries and poetry. There are Spanish and French language editions available, too.
