Collectible Toys

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on June 22nd, 2005

My husband was the youngest child by many years and all his older brothers and sisters, parents, and family friends showered him with toys. Along the way, he managed to amass an entire collection of Star Wars toys made of diecast metal.

Years later, while moving house, his mom gave it all away. We coulda been millionaires! Or at least been a few thousand dollars richer.

My husband isn’t the only to have lost valuable toys.

The force deserted Star Wars fan Graham Duck when a lightning strike destroyed his £20,000 collection of toys and memorabilia from the films.

~BBC News, June 21, 2005

Our son has a few toys that could probably be considered collectibles, in particular his Thunderbirds spacecrafts which aren’t currently sold in the U.S. The trouble is they’re made of plastic and are pretty flimsy.

I doubt most of his toys will hold up long enough for us to sell them on eBay for big bucks. But who knows? At the very least, I’ll save them just so he won’t be pining for them as a 30-year-old adult.

What kind of collectible toys do you own?

My parents saved ALL my old toys, many with original boxes. They actually are not worth that much if they have been played with (which all mine have). I have real metal and rubber Tonka trucks, Matchbox cars, board games, Strawberry Shortcake dolls, etc., etc….

river2sea72 - Your parents must have a lot of storage space and have never moved house! Toys are definitely worth more if they haven’t been played but if they’re rare, I think even well-loved toys can be worth quite a bit. Lucky you!

You’re right about that. They had a large attic and still live in the house I grew up in. They drove a truck full of my old toys out to us and now it is my burden to bear! I haven’t looked into the value of any of this stuff yet though…

Burden? I’m sure your daughter doesn’t think that! :)
