Special Oxford Dictionary for Grade-School Kids

The complete Oxford English Dictionary is the pinnacle of lexicography. Now there’s an Oxford Primary Dictionary for seven- to 11-year-olds featuring sample sentences from the works of favorite children’s book authors JK Rowling, Roald Dahl, CS Lewis, and Enid Blyton. (BBC News, July 1, 2005)

Some sample words and sentences include (The Harry Potter Automatic News Aggregator):

  • innumerable

    Innumerable candles were hovering in mid-air, over four long crowded table.
    ~Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets

  • insolent

    Malfoy gave Professor Lupin an insolent stare, which took in the patches on his robes and the dilapidated suitcase.
    ~The Prisoner of Azkaban

  • haphazardly

    Mrs Weasley was clattering around, cooking breakfast a little haphazardly, throwing dirty looks at her sons as she threw sausages into the frying pan.
    ~The Chamber of Secrets

This version of the dictionary is set for release this month, July 2005.
