Spiders On Toys and Under Sandboxes

My son checking for spiders.
Here’s a story that would creep out even the most ardent animal lover. One of Heloise’s readers wrote that her family had found black widow spiders under the toys kept in their back patio sandbox. Even worse, the underside of the sandbox had become a nesting ground for countless other black widows that they think might have been living there for two or three years.
It’s been a while since I brought my toddler down to our apartment sandbox to play. I could never get over the feeling that the sandbox isn’t very well maintained and with rainy season in Vietnam, all sorts of bugs, leaves, and other debris fly into the sandbox.
If properly maintained, private sandboxes should be the best option. Just make sure there aren’t any creepy crawlies inside or out!
Here are some ways sand play benefits children (Healthy Childcare):
- Physically. Sand play improves fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination.
- Cognitively. Sand play increases vocabulary, lets children explore changes in property between wet and dry sand, and lets children examine cause and effect (such as when sand is poured out of an object).
- Socially and emotionally. Sand play gives children the opportunity to imitate others and encourages fantasy play.
