Toys and Tips That Travel Well
My family takes overseas trips at least five times a year because we live in a different country from all our relatives. Over the past three years, I’ve learned a few things about travelling with a baby, now toddler.
- No need to bring lots of toys and amusements. My son has always found anything on board the plane to be more fun, from the window shade to plastic drinking cups.
- Don’t bring any toys that can roll away. My son dropped one of his favorite balls during takeoff on one flight. We heard it roll toward the back of the plane, then someone exclaiming in delight, “Oh! A ball!” The mystery thief never returned the ball.
- Feeding your child is easiest if you breastfeed (sit next to the window for maximum privacy). For older kids, order a kids meal before the flight and bring some small snacks in case they’re being picky.
- Bring your own blankie in case the airplane blanket is gross.
- Bring an extra set of clothes for the child AND for yourself.

FYI, the Good Housekeeping Institute recommends Crayola Activity Tote,
I Spy Memory Game, and VideoNow Jr. Personal Video Player (
in color) for travelling fun.

Good tips! And, I agree with #1 for the most part. Having some "familiar" toys is good. But, I think it’s true that kids always find something to play with no matter what anyway. Some of Cam’s favourite "toys" include - an empty can of Pringles, a mailing tube cap, junk mail, plastic cutlery, cardboard… you get the picture. ;-)
