Children’s Audio Books at Audible.com: The Redwall Series
My kids are totally engaged right now. They’re listening to CD 2 of Mossflower, one of Brian Jacques’ books in the Redwall series. They’ve been major Redwall fans for the past several years. We read the books, listen to the audio books, watch the PBS series, and play lots of Redwall games (where they pretend to be their favorite Redwall character).
While we don’t like to rely on electronic stimulation too much for our kids and still prefer the printed word over the recorded one, there is much to love about audiobooks, and they are wonderful learning aids for children. When sitting down to a good audiobook, your children learn to hone their listening skills, their imagination is stoked, their comprehension abilities challenged. The imagery in Redwall is so rich, they create pictures in your children’s minds that are only limited by their own vision. It’s a great way to build vocabulary too. If you want to take it a step further, you can have your children narrate the story back to you after they’ve heard it — prepare to be amazed at what children retain, even those as young as 4 or 5. They can even make their own little books telling their own version of the Redwall stories. These skills that they develop now while they’re little will serve them well, especially when they get to the higher grades and need to develop note-taking and analyzing skills.
Audiobooks are great things to have in your car as well, and we always keep a large selection in a CD holder, ready to play at a moment’s notice. For long trips, they are indispensable. Besides the Redwall series, Audible.com has an incredible selection of children’s and adult’s books, including bestsellers. You could literally get an education in the comfort of your car. We got a membership, so each month, we download our book choices and burn them onto CDs. Audiobooks from audible.com are some of the best values around for your money.

I remember listening to audio books when my family first moved to the U.S. I think that was one of the reasons my English reading and comprehension improved so quickly. Having audio books in the car must work really well when kids are captive in their seats. ;)

At this age, when we don’t have time to read, audio books will save us from being illiterate. Audible.com is good, but you can get almost any audio book you wish at your local library. Check out your library’s digital download services. You can also download hundreds of free audio books from http://www.booksalley.com
