Story Sacks

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on August 1st, 2005

Sherri Osborne of Family Crafts at About.com has a great idea for firing up kids’ imaginations. She makes story sacks for specific stories by taking a bag and filling it up with a book and other goodies such as:

  • Supplies to make related puppets, games, props, costumes, etc.
  • A cassette tape of the story being told
  • Related coloring books or coloring pages
  • A fact book to learn more about situations or items in the story
  • A purchased game or toy that is related to the story
  • Pictures of related places or events
  • Plain paper and crayons to write or draw a story
  • Written suggestions and items to help act out the story
  • Artifacts related to the story
  • Related videos to watch

For my toddler, Legos are critical to re-enacting stories to his full and lasting enjoyment. We also go online and look for related fun websites. It’s not always books first either, sometimes we’re inspired by a movie or something we see in everyday life. The important thing to remember is that everything is interconnected, including books.
