Story Sacks
Sherri Osborne of Family Crafts at About.com has a great idea for firing up kids’ imaginations. She makes story sacks for specific stories by taking a bag and filling it up with a book and other goodies such as:
- Supplies to make related puppets, games, props, costumes, etc.
- A cassette tape of the story being told
- Related coloring books or coloring pages
- A fact book to learn more about situations or items in the story
- A purchased game or toy that is related to the story
- Pictures of related places or events
- Plain paper and crayons to write or draw a story
- Written suggestions and items to help act out the story
- Artifacts related to the story
- Related videos to watch
For my toddler, Legos are critical to re-enacting stories to his full and lasting enjoyment. We also go online and look for related fun websites. It’s not always books first either, sometimes we’re inspired by a movie or something we see in everyday life. The important thing to remember is that everything is interconnected, including books.
