Safe Search Engines for Kids

by Gayla McCord on August 3rd, 2005

Our daughter belongs to an extension class in school together with other kids from other classes who get to learn advanced lessons in computing, Maths and English. While it is good to allow them experiment with the internet and maximise the value it can provide them. It is best to safeguard our kids from the danger of going to sites that are inappropriate for them.

It is best to have kids surf the internet with adult supervision. Here are a few of the search engines that are safe and friendly to kids:

1. Yahooligans - Web Guide version of Yahoo! for Kids.

2. Onekey - Web Guide version of Google for Kids.

3. Kids Net - a searchable database of more than 30,000 sites designed specifically for kids, that also contains an English dictionary and a thesaurus.

4. Ask Jeeves - a kid friendly way for kids to find answers to their questions online.

5. Ivy’s Search Engine Resources For Kids - the ultimate search engine resource available to kids.

That’s a great list, Christine. I was just thinking the other day how awful it is when I type in various Star Wars spacecrafts into Google images that I’d get random pics of half-naked women. Now I know here to go to find kid-safe sites although I suppose nothing is failsafe.

yup, so true that is why with my 8 y/o daughter, we are very careful on the sites she goes to (we normally are with her when she surfs the net).
