Tips on Writing Children’s Books

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on August 13th, 2005

Children’s book author Lizzy Rockwell gave writing tips to a summer school class of second- through sixth-graders. To write a successful children’s book, she says, you have to pay attention to the following:

  • Your approach to the tale has to be logical.
  • Think about word length.
  • Consider how best to organize the story.
  • Help children relate to the book by addressing a common experience.
  • Use similes and metaphors to draw children in with beautiful language.

Ready to write your own children’s books now?
