The Chronicles of Narnia Series: Must-Read Classics!
With The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe (the first installment movie from The Chronicles of Narnia series) coming out in a few months, I thought it would be an opportune time to post about the books! My kids have been in love with C.S. Lewis’ masterpiece for children for several years now. I first got the collection for my then 8-year old, now a 14-year old who still takes the books down every now and then to reread them. In fact we’re on our second set of Narnia books, as we had gotten the paperbacks the first time, and have needed to upgrade to the hardcovers as they last longer around here. Last Christmas, we gifted the children with the audiobook version as well, masterfully done by such performers as Kenneth Branagh and Patrick Stewart. And I’m not going to go into the controversy as to whether we should read the books in a particular order — they need to be read by children, period:).
And have you seen the Narnia preview? I have to admit I have become increasingly disappointed with Disney films through the years, but their decision to produce the Narnia movies restores my faith in them (sorta) as a producer of good quality movies for kids. My kids have watched the preview over and over and we can’t wait! Well, given that this is WETA, the same people who brought us LOTR, it’s going to be a movie that we won’t soon forget. Hopefully, those that haven’t read Narnia before this will read the books before they go see the movies. Either that or the movie will inspire a new generation of Narnia readers/lovers. (Trivia: Did you know that C.S. Lewis and Tolkien (Lord of the Rings) were great friends?)
Note: I’m posting this under the “Children’s Books (6-10 years)” category, but the books are wonderful for read-alouds and holds even my 3-year-old’s attention, AND they offer something even to older readers like my teen, not to mention adults, who tend to read them for the spiritual lessons they offer.

We’re looking forward to the movie too. The books have been read and re-read and much loved. The old Narnia movies (from the BBC miniseries) have been watched several times, but they don’t have the sparkle that the books do. If the new movie is faithful to the teaser bits from the previews, it will be wonderful.
My toddler has even paused in his playing to watch parts of the old movies, despite the lack of attention span to watch the whole thing. (Then again, it might just be that the movies aren’t that exciting… heh)
