Monetary Contributions Better Than Donations of Toys and Other Items
Just a reminder in case you are tempted to collect items such as toys to donate to victims of Hurricane Katrina.
…the Red Cross is unable to accept any large collections of items, such as used clothing, hygiene items, furniture, toys, blankets, and canned goods. Nor is it able to accept small, individual donations of these items.
The Red Cross has more information about donating goods for areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina.
The U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency has a list of organizations accepting donations or volunteers.

Locally there is a business that is collecting tangible items (rather than cash) and trucking it all down to Texas to hand out themselves. If people are absolutely set on donating actual items such as toys or diapers, contacting the local news agencies is probably a good way to find out if there are any groups in your area that are going to be physically taking supplies to the disaster area or to any of the numerous shelters.

(Here from BE) It’s good to let people know about this…I read that on the Red Cross site. It’s not hard at all around here (Dallas area) to find people/organizations accepting goods rather than cash. Two big ones are Catholic Charities and Salvation Army.

Analisa and Christopher, Thank you for your comments. :) It’s wonderful to know that even if some of us can’t spare the cash, there are still places who will accept our generosity.
