Kiwi Furbies
Hasbro has made a Furby that’s programmed specifically to recognize the accent of New Zealanders, also called Kiwi-speak. Fifty students from the Kio Kio School in the Waikato were asked to record certain phrases such as “I love you”.
Ngaire Osborne, 8, said it was cool.
“They asked us to say some things so the Furby could talk to other people,” she said.
Gosh, are Furbies ugly or what? Just seeing their picture gives me the heebie-jeebies. Maybe they have brainwashing powers when they speak.
ETA: The Furby shown in the Amazon ad is NOT a Kiwi speaking one.

In Bret Easton’s Ellis’s latest book ‘Lunar Park’ he writes about his insipid fear of Furbys. But for copyright purposes he calls them ‘Terbys’.

Sarah, Thanks for the comment! I’ll go check out Ellis’s book. Sounds like I may identify with it. ;)
Q, Would you believe I’ve never watched Gremlins? Not fond of ugly little things. hehee
