Curious George and His Creators, The Reyses
Curious George is the popular lead in a series of children’s books that was first published in the United States in 1941. George has become a financial success as well. Since his creation,
- The books have sold more than 27 million copies.
- There have been several “Curious George” films, including an animated one featuring the voice of Will Ferrell that is scheduled for release February 2006.
- Theater productions
- Toy figures
- Next year, PBS will begin a Curious George series for pre-schoolers.
In The Journey That Saved Curious George: The True Wartime Escape of Margret and H. A. Rey by Louise Borden, a book for grade schoolers, the story of George’s German-born Jewish creators and their escape from Nazi invasion is told.
Her account, intended for older children, is illustrated in whimsical European style by Allan Drummond, and includes photographs of the Reys and wartime Europe, as well as H. A. Rey’s pocket diaries and transit documents.
We’ve enjoyed Curious George books in our home and in a few years time, Louise Borden’s book about George’s creators will join George on the shelf as well.

My favorite CG book is the one where he gets a paper route and makes the papers into hats and sails them. I made many many paper hats. heh. I can’t wait until my little ones are old enough to enjoy George.

My kids love Curious George! Once we had to take our then 2-year-old to the hospital. Luckily, we had just read Curious George Goes to the Hospital a few days before! It’s unbelievable how relaxed she was with the hospital setting, esp. with the x-ray machine which Curious George had to go on as well. She was such a trooper and I was so grateful for CG.
