Children’s Toys NOT To Get
At the Children’s Books, Toys and Things Blog, we usually highlight toys that we like or that have proven to be popular and successful. Stefania at Blogging Baby, though, has made a list of toys that she thinks are annoying - we have three out of the six:
1. Hokey Pokey Elmo
2. Police cars, fire trucks, and other toys with sirens.
3. Toys flutes (or in our case, toy trumpets)
While I thought the post was amusing, I can’t say I’ve ever experienced the heights of frustration, anger, and hatred Stefania exhibited. After three years, I’ve learned to tune it all out. Not being able to do so would have cost me my mental health.

I just had to go read her entry. I hope she was just venting annoyance and that she doesn’t actually act horrible to her kids about the toys. Kids love noisy toys. Repetitious noisy toys. They’ll shriek weirdly all on their own even if they don’t have noisy toys. Comes with the territory. I figure if I can’t handle the noise, the kids can play in the other room, outdoors, I can wear earplugs, or hey, novel idea, re-direct them to a quiet game.
That might just involve some hands-on parenting, like reading a book together. Or fingerpainting! I wouldn’t turn my toddler loose with fingerpaints or a Lite Brite, but those are great toys.
… /ranting. heh.

Q, I haven’t played with a Lite Brite in years! I bet S would love them. Thanks for reminding me!

What I dislike more than noisy toys are ones without an off switch. So when your child isn’t using it, it can go off randomly from a vibration. Fisher Price is very good about having a hidden off switch for their noisy toys. Shellcore (a cheap manufacturer) isn’t.
Alan has a Fisher Price airport he doesn’t really play with, it’s was a gift. He doesn’t know it makes noise, but the sound switch has been off sinc he got it!

Leslie, Off switches are VERY GOOD. Toys without inevitably start making noise in the dead of night when I’m the only one who gets woken up from deep sleep!

Parentingjoy, I got my Hokey Pokey Elmo on sale in Singapore and it’s pretty cute, but the novelty wore off pretty quick. The Tumbling Time Tigger looks really cute too. I featured it in this entry: http://www.aboutweblogs.com...
