Video Games That Get Children On Their Feet

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on November 8th, 2005

Following up on yesterday’s post about the British Heart Foundation’s attempt to instill healthier eating habits in kids, game companies are also trying to create games that get kids off their butts. Marc Sherrod, academic director of game art & design for The Art Institute of California - San Francisco, said:

…the bottom line is balance. Ten hours a day playing games is not healthy, nor is ten hours a day studying or playing sports. It’s balance and guidance that gives youngsters a solid foundation to be successful adults later in life.

I agree. Most guys my generation spent a significant amount of time playing video games while growing up, and many still do. That doesn’t mean they’re all uniformly couch potatoes. Video games don’t determine whether kids will be sendentary, their environment and own natural inclinations do. I’m sedentary and I spent most of my time reading!

My brothers and their friends did play a lot of video games, but then they’d end up in some kind of guy brawl in the livingroom. There was plenty of physical energy usage going on. LOL.

Q, That is so funny! I’m glad they got off their duffs to roll around a bit.
