Taking Kids Fishing
My dad used to take us girls fishing every month or so. We had long bamboo fishing poles with little floating red and white bobbers. It might be harder to tear kids away from their video games now but the Kids All-American Fishing website has some tips:
- How to take a kid fishing
- Fishing trip checklists
- Five ways to catch more fish
- Fishing programs and contests for children
Before you head out to the nearest creek, river, or lake, maybe you could have some fun practicing at home? I made my son a fishing rod out of a toy golf club, rope, and suction cup hook (I’ll show off the creation this Saturday for our toy creations series). Then we decorated a big cardboard fish with a hole for the mouth. Other friends have used wire clothes hangers and paper clips or string with magnets on the end.
Let’s go fishing!

One thing to be sure to do is look up EPA cautions about the eating-quality of the fish from the stream you will be fishing.
If you practice catch&release fishing, then it doesn’t matter. But if you are wanting some fish for dinner, best to check. I know the river near town here is on the "women & kids avoid, men eat only a couple fish per year" status, due to pollutants. :/

Q, Thanks for the reminder. I’m sure some of the fish we caught when we were kids weren’t exactly safe. *shudder*
