Children’s Books for Every Occasion: Potty Training/Learning

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on November 19th, 2005

Learning to use the toilet is a rite of passage for every family. We are finally getting the hang of it at our house but not without some struggles. In my experience, books (my son’s favorite was Once Upon A Potty) and DVD’s don’t seem to make too much difference.

Each child progresses at his/her own pace and although we should teach them about the process and give them plenty of opportunities to try, pushing them can only backfire or, at best, not work at all. So, I suggest initiating the potty training/learning conversation, but leave it to kids to eventually do the deed. It’s just the first of many things they’ll have to figure out (partly) on their own.
