Mega Bloks or Legos?

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on November 21st, 2005

Mega Bloks won the right last week to continue selling its products in Canada. Lego had hoped to assert its trademark “knobs on blocks” look over Mega Bloks.

Duncan Riley wrote:

The wonder of lego for me as a child was that I could get pieces to build a town of practical items. I could drive the cars around on the Lego Road maps (which all connected up) and on which you could put your lego buildings. It was magical, in a practical, real life sense.

2 opinions for Mega Bloks or Legos?

We are a Mega-block-free house. I started with Legos in the late 70s. My next younger sibling inherited my stash, he in turn passed on the increased hoard to the next, and so on. My son acquired the 20 gallon can stash a year or two ago.

We saw a Mega block set at a garage sale for a couple bucks, and bought it because it was such a deal. All the pieces, box, building instructions… and the pieces wouldn’t stick together well enough for him to actually play with the finished piece. As it was some sort of "skate board park" with little dudes and skateboards that you were supposed to skate all about the skate park, that was a disappointment.

Glad I didn’t buy it new. Won’t ever buy their product again. Lego has both Duplo and Quatro for the little ones that aren’t old enough or dextrous enough for the tiny Legos. We have many many Duplos in our house. heh.

Q, We have so much fun with our Lego Duplos . Like you said, Mega Bloks don’t hold tight and ends up being really frustrating for older kids. I’ve never tried the products that correspond to Duplos and regular Legos, though.
