Children Dealing with Fear Through Books

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on December 9th, 2005

Unbelievable, but true. JK Rowling has been accused of promoting witchcraft with the Harry Potter series and some parents simply think the story line is too scary.

JK Rowling, of course, believes otherwise.

I feel very strongly that there is a move to sanitise literature because we’re trying to protect children not from the grizzly facts of life but from their own imaginations.

We need to fear and we need to confront fear in a controlled environment and that’s a very important part of growing up.

The child that has been protected from the dementors in fiction, I would argue, is much more likely to fall prey to them later in life in reality.

I agree. Most children read the books with a supportive parent within easy access. And, it’s impossible to protect kids forever from the infinite number of scary things in the world. If you ask my toddler, he’d say one of them is Santa Claus.
