Play Therapy

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on December 9th, 2005

Children who’ve survived the Hurricane Katrina disaster have benefited from play therapy. Mental health specialists from Johns Hopkins guided these children toward healing by:

  • drawing pictures
  • playing with dolls
  • creating images in a sandbox

Through these playful activities, they were able to express their emotions using imagery rather than talking, which can sometimes be too painful.

Children who participated in play therapy were:

  • less excitable
  • slept better
  • more eager to go school
  • less clingy

Even children who have been fortunate this year to escape major disaster can benefit from play. Hope you’ll take some time out to play with the kids in your life today.
