Outdoor Fun in Winter Weather
Wintertime isn’t something we’ve enjoyed since leaving Japan for tropical southern Vietnam a couple of years ago. But in the Northern Hemisphere, pediatricians and fitness experts are concerned about a decrease in children’s physical activity level during cold weather. Children burn half as many calories in the winter as they do in the summer and tend to eat more in the winter.
Some suggestions for achieving the recommended continuous movement for 45 to 60 minutes multiple times a week include:
- Sledding
- Snowball fights
- Snowshoeing
- Skiing
- Skating
- Hiking
- Swimming in indoor pools
- Indoor team sports such as volleyball
- Karate
- Taking the stairs instead of the elevator/escalator
- Power-walking in the mall
I guess power-shopping doesn’t belong on that list.
