Children’s Books for Every Occasion: Bullying
When I visited my son’s new nursery school in London, one of the questions I made sure to ask the head teacher was about their treatment of bullying because it is often featured in British papers and TV. She said that any school which claimed not to have any bullying isn’t telling the truth. Bullying is age appropriate behavior and while there is zero tolerance, kids need to be taught how to interact with each other without resorting to it.
Bootsie Barker Bites by Barbara Bottner may be a good book to introduce to primary school children who are learning to deal with playground politics. I wish I could shield my son from ever being hurt both physically and emotionally, but that would be unrealistic and counterproductive to his growth. Books on the subject will hopefully give him some ideas about what to expect and how to react.
