Sesame Beginnings

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on March 21st, 2006

Sesame Workshop is collaborating with Zero to Three to create Sesame Beginnings, developmentally appropriate TV shows for under-twos. Featuring baby Muppets and their caregivers, the DVD’s will be released in April.

Dr. Susan Linn of Campaign for a Commercial-Free Childhood (CCFC) is appalled by the idea:

Sesame Beginnings is just one more effort to establish brand loyalty in babies, encouraging their devotion to TV characters who have been licensed to promote hundreds of other products, including sugary fruit snacks, vacation resorts and electronic toys like the Tickle Me Elmo series that diminish rather than encourage creative play.

Ouch.

2 opinions for Sesame Beginnings

Ouch indeed! what a scathing comment! My kids really like Elmo, and the shows where Elmo does nice things, or learns to tie his shoes, are things _I_ find rather helpful.

Blaming Elmo and the creators, for the purchasing choices parents make, bleah. Cuz I don’t know about anyone else’s kids, but my pre-schooler doesn’t have the wherewithall or means to go buy Elmo snacks. LOL

Deb: Elmo cracks me up but S is totally freaked by him! Just can’t understand kids’ way of thinking. haha

We don’t have any Elmo snacks in our house either!
