Battery Xtender

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on March 27th, 2006

Once you have children in the house, or even before, the number of batteries you use grows exponentially. Most of the toys I’ve seen say that you aren’t supposed to use rechargeable batteries so I never have. But now there’s a new device called the Battery Xtender that claims to recharge regular alkaline batteries safely.

After 15 years of testing and refinement, the Battery Xtender has arrived. Used as directed, this device can simultaneously recharge sizes AA, AAA, C, and D of 1.2 - 1.5 volt disposable alkaline batteries, extending their useful life up to ten times or more. The Battery Xtender is also capable of recharging other types of battery chemistries, including Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), Nickel Cadmium (NiCad), Zinc Carbon, Titanium and Rechargeable Alkaline Manganese (RAM).

Luckily for me, my son doesn’t care much for battery-powered toys and most times even asks me to remove batteries so he doesn’t have to deal with the noise. But that’s probably about to change with the C battery-guzzling train set my parents brought him this month.

1 opinion for Battery Xtender

I too experienced an explosion in the number of batteries in the house after our daughter was born. I bought a Battery Xtender about a year ago, and have been pretty pleased with it. Although they advertise that you can reuse batteries for like 10 or 15 times, as you might expect, that’s rather optimistic on their part. I find I get about five or so recharges out of a given battery; after that they start to leak and have to be disposed of (please don’t throw them in the trash!). But still, to quintuple the use I get out of my batteries is good economics and good for the environment. I’d recommend the “Battery Xtender”, bad spelling aside, to anyone interested in this sort of thing. Don’t expect to get 10-15 uses out of your batteries, but still, getting a half dozen is pretty good.
