Toy Talk #4: urbanMamas
This past week, urbanMamas asked their readers what toys are a good investment for pre-toddlers or infants. These are some of the toy suggestions:
- Skwish Color Burst
- Stacking Rings And Rattles
- Shape Sorter
- Stacking cups like Lamaze: Stack ‘n Nest Birds
- Play silks
- Books like ABC Block Books: 26 Board Books in a Box!
- Balls
- Kitchen utensils
Thanks for the suggestions, urbanMamas!

Kitchen utensils all the way. My kids spend more time emptying the lower cupboards and fighting over who gets the measuring spoons and mixing bowls and assorted canned goods, than they do playing with their “real” toys.

I would add the *etch o sketch* (by Chad Valley) I bought for my daughter when she was one year ( now two). She absolutely loves me drawing round her hands, feet and whatever else she thinks will produce amazing shapes. I draw a big cirle and ask her to put the eyes, ears, mouth etc. on and she scribbles away (not always in the right place) and is so pleased with the results. Now when I draw a small circle she shouts “bubble”, or “balloon” and if you sketch a stalk and leaf she giggles “apple”. To my surprise the other day she said the following numbers out loud and they were in random order as I wrote them on the etch o skecth - 2, 10, 3, 7,. There’s absolutely no mess with the thing - no need for re-fills or extras and now the little miss is identifying her scribbles as blue dogs and chickens. By far she plays with this and her books, and her toy buggy more than anything else- more than the flash cards and other educational bits we parents try to accustom our kiddies with.

Andrea: You’ve rekindled an old desire! I’ve wanted to get a big one of those for the longest time. Now I may have to…. hee hee
