More TV = More Shopping
Not that you didn’t already know, but Stanford researchers recently found that TV time correlated with shopping time. Compared to their peers, kids who watched more TV wanted the following for every extra hour of screen time a day:
- An extra toy every three to four months
- An extra food or beverage every three to six months
And that would be an increase from two to three toys or 11 to 12? Not revealing how many toys my kiddo gets. Just sayin’….
And, of course, the obesity epidemic gets dragged in too. Dr. Thomas Robinson, director of Stanford Packard Children’s Center for Healthy Weight:
Kids are an easy target for advertisers. Younger children aren’t even able to understand that ads, which are now cropping up in video games and movies, online and even in cell phones, are intended to sell them things. Marketers need to be part of the solution for the obesity epidemic by helping parents, not making it harder for them.
Hot button kids’ issues today? Obesity, consumerism, and bullying.
