Tamagotchis are “In” Again

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on April 20th, 2006

Tamagotchi Connection: Version 3 Pink with IceCream ConesTen year ago, I had a Tamagotchi. It was fun for about five minutes then it was forgotten. But Tamagotchis are back again and this time, Japanese toymaker Bandai thinks they’ll be a long-lasting fad (isn’t that an oxymoron?).

The latest versions in Japan ,launched in 2004 and priced at about $25, come with communications capabilities so tamagotchis can meet each other and play games through an infrared sensor.

The pets can grow into adults that hold down jobs and even get married to someone else’s tamagotchi. Once the couple has babies — always twins so each owner gets a baby — the parents disappear to Planet Tamagotchi, which the children can visit via a personal computer.

It’s gotta be tough marketing these little electronic toys this time around. Kids all have PSP’s, cell phones, laptops, MP3’s, and other digital devices. I can’t imagine a cheaply made little plastic toy squawking for attention could be that much fun.

Have your kids been clamoring for a Tamagotchi?

I had one. Boooooring. And talk about NEEDY. The virtual ones on the ‘net weren’t much more fun. I can’t imagine this “new” take on the fad will last any longer than it did the last time. Can anyone say “Furby”?

Deb L: Like we don’t have enough needy creatures in our life, right? LOL And, I can say “Furby,” but I don’t want to! *shudder*
