Children’s Books For Every Occasion: Cooking

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on April 29th, 2006

DK Children's CookbookI’m a big fan of book publisher Dorling Kindersley also known simply as DK. This is a book I’m definitely going to get because I’ve been trying to involve my son in cooking thinking it might entice him to eat more and be less picky.

He washes then cuts vegetables with plastic knives and mixes things up. We have a lot of fun but…he’s not so excited to eat his cooking even though he always says excitedly, “It looks delicious!”

We made Rice Krispies treats today and he wasn’t keen to eat this very sweet concoction either. I give up.

What have you cooked with your kids lately?

I haven’t cooked with my son yet, other than letting him stir batter or something. He is 4 and that seems to young too me to actually cook. That book does sound really cool and I may want to get it.

Hi, Amy! Thanks for the comment.

My son is 3 months shy of 4 and surprised me with his ability to cut baby corn with a plastic knife and other easy-to-cut fruits and vegetables. Must be the Play Doh practice!

I don’t let him near the hot stove or oven but when making Rice Krispies treats today, I had the heat on really low so I thought it was ok to let him melt the butter and marshmallows with supervision.

My kids are easy to cook for. Anything that doesn’t have peppers, brocholi, onions, garlic, vegetables, meat, egg or strong or hot spice. Other than that, they like just about anything.

we have 3 kids, aged 5, 7 & 12. they all love to help in the kitchen. the boys are happy to help (the 7 year old wants harder tasks) while the 12 year old is becomng capable. we are confident in her ability to use the gas range, but not so in her ability to make ingredient substitutions when baking!

gary: Very nice! Would love to learn what kind of creative ingredient substitutions your 12-year-old has come up with! :)

We love those DK books too! I have not seen the cooking one but I will have to get it. My 3 year old loves to help cook. Some ideas of things they can do from a very young age are stir, dump things in the bowl, cut soft things with plastic knife, count ingredients, help get things out of the cabinets, grease pans, and wash fruits and vegetables.

My uber-picky preschooler loves to help cook too; though he will refuse to do more than smell the end result the majority of the time. He’s even suspicious of unfamiliar sugary breakfast cereals!!

Good luck with the food issue. Pre-school & its snack time has really helped my son. All the parents send assorted treats to the classroom, so the variety is fairly broad; and my little guy tends to not eat much in the morning on school days, so by snack time he’s willing to try just about anything. LOL.

He still won’t eat raisins though.

Mom: (It’s so funny to type that to a person who isn’t my mom!) Those are all wonderful ideas for involving kids in cooking! Do you use a special step stool too? I have mine standing on a kitchen chair and it always makes me nervous. Not that he isn’t always jumping off of something anyway!

Deb L: I’ve considered starving S. Maybe it’s time to try. *evil laugh* OK, everyone, I’m JUST KIDDING!!!
