Toys for Infants and Pre-Toddlers
In a previous post, Don asked about toys for a one-year-old.
I was just doing some toy shopping for a 1 year old. Boy, it’s hard to shop for someone so young. At first, I thought of RESPs, but only parents can open those accounts, then it was onto the toys. I ended up buying the Thomas Train and another toy. But, I thought it would be good for you to post something to help similar shoppers. I hate shopping for infants.
That’s a great question, Don. You can find a list of toys for pre-toddlers and infants in Toy Talk #4 and some more suggestions in our Baby Toys category.
In general, I would suggest any toy that is colorful and has lots of things to turn and pull. Most parents probably don’t appreciate electronic toys too much unless the sound can be turned off. Bath toys are always great too.
As for hating shopping… *gasp* ;)
Does anyone else have any suggestions for Don?

By one a lot of kids have developed interests. Whether it be blocks, cars/trucks, stuffed animals, musical instruments, or what have you there is something they play with more than anything else. Also because one year olds have no concept of taking care of toys so they last, it can’t hurt for them to have 50 of the same thing.

Here’s what our 11 month old boy chews on… er, plays with: Mega-blocks and Little People animals. (Well, whenever his big brother let’s him.) We’ve also got a couple sets of old measuring cups that have been handed down to the kids, and they get used frequently, too.

Our kids like the kitchen cookware too. I had to put the set of measuring cups & spoons I actually use in an upper cupboard so I wouldn’t have to dig through the toybox every time I needed one.
Whatever you give a young child though, put it in the biggest box you can find, and wrap it with lots of crinkly paper. The box and paper will probably be played with much longer than the toy inside.

My favorite 1-year-old birthday gift is one of those simple dog toys that you pull on a string. I prefer the ones with no batteries but sometimes those are hard to find. Such fun for the little one as they start to walk!

Great ideas, guys! I hope Don rushes out and get more gifts for his little friend soon. :D
And, LOL, Amy about buying 50 of the same toy. My MIL totally does that!!!
