Reader Question: Books and games for six-year-olds?
Play Library reader jan asks:
I will be looking for recommendations of books (and games)for my six year old grandson. He’s into all of the gross action figures and video games, but so far I have found books that interest him and we have quiet times under the shade tree with a pitcher of lemonade and cookies.
My son’s just shy of four so I’m not quite sure what would be good. We just learned to play Snakes/Chutes and Ladders which I’m guessing is a little too simple for a six-year-old.
Help!! What would you recommend to jan?

SnakesChutes&Ladders is fun no matter how old you are, I think a 6 year old would love it. :)
Candyland is another good one.
Checkers would also be something a 6 year old could catch onto pretty quickly.

Bionicles, definitely. They’re robots made by lego. They look like characters out of video games, but they demand hand-on play in three dimensions.

Deb: What’s with using Chutes instead of Snakes? It’s not one of those “let’s not scare the vulnerable kiddies” things is it?
Kate: Oh, yes. A lot of boys I know are crazy about Bionicles. They’re pretty freaky looking to me. :P
jan: Another idea is card games. I wrote up a simple version not too long ago and the US Playing Card Company has more Children’s Card Games.

Have you ever wondered about the history of Snakes and ladders
One of the most memorable games I had as a child was Abalone but i would wait until he is 5-6 or so.
