Warning: Burning Playground Equipment

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on June 29th, 2006

As the summer heats up and the sun burns down on everything, remember to check all playground equipment before your kids climb on.

Jerry Tyler with the Benton-Franklin Health District said the older metal slides and swings are dangerous because they retain heat and can cause second and third degree burns to little kids.

“There could be metal rivets that can be hot. Even plastic slides can be an issue,” said Tyler.

Some of the more innovative playground equipment such as this one at the playground near me could definitely burn kids especially when they take off their shoes to play in any water features or simply to cool off. And don’t forget the sunscreen!

The kids went outside to play in the sprinklers yesterday, and the cement was so hot they had to wear their shoes to keep from burning the bottoms of their feet when they ran on the sidewalk. (they prefer to run around on the sidewalk and dodge the sprinkler & wet grass, rather than what I did as a kid which was to run right through the wettest part of the sprinkler I could. lol)

In the summer, we just go to the park in the early morning, if at all, or on shady days. And always always bring a lot of water for drinking, and make the kids drink it. Much too easy to dehydrate on the playground.

It’s currently 32C, expected to get up to 34C by 6pm. bleah. Nights have been getting down to 16C or so. (I have been practicing using Celsius for temps whenever I can. Wunderground weather lets you display the temps in both formats. :D how geeky/cool is that?!)

We’re only at 17% humidity right now, and does that ever feel DRY. I think a more ‘high humidity’ day is closer to 30%. We don’t have a heat index for summer weather, so don’t have the REAL awful humidity other places do. I’ve been in humidity like that, it’s hard to even breathe.

Deb: Way to go, metric woman! After living in metric countries for the past 8 years, I am now finally getting a grip on how hot these temps are. This morning on BBC Breakfast show, they were going on about how hot it would be this weekend - 30 C. Lots of moaning. Ridiculous. LOL

I would like a moderate temperature climate, and a moderate amount of humidity, someplace where it doesn’t get hurricanes, tsunamis, earthquakes, or volcanoes. Oh, and that The Wage-earner can make a good living. That’s not too much to ask for is it?? lol.

We usually only get a couple or three week-long heat-waves here in the summer, so people aren’t used to the heat. Makes my kids just oh-so-enjoyable…

Hey! We have this roundabout thingy in our playground! As for heat, we are so used to it we have mastered the art of dodging the sun. You only see people going to the playground early in the morning and in the evening. When it gets too hot, everybody goes into hiding.

Parentingjoy: I’d never seen that roundabout thingy before until last weekend! Playgrounds are sure different than when we were kids, don’t you think? I’ll have to get playground tips from you when we go back to Singapore. ;)
