Emergency Fun Kit

My family and I spent a scant half-hour in the basement last night as the result of tornado sirens and warnings in our area. Thankfully, we witnessed no more than a heavy rain, but it was time enough to realize that we were not prepared to keep the kids entertained and distracted while we sat out the storm.

In light of recent catastrophes, we all know that we need to keep our emergency survival kits and supplies loaded and ready. But I think it’s important, too, to have some activities for the kids to be engaged in while we’re waiting for storms to pass. Not only so that we aren’t bombarded with questions about what’s happening outside, but so the kids will be distracted from the situation at hand. It may help to relieve their anxieties and fears to be engaged in a fun and familiar activity.

My thoughts are some games, dress up clothes, a few books, and definitely a few flashlights with batteries in case the lights go out!

What ideas do you have for an emergency fun kit?
