Same Toys, Different Continents #4: Ice Cream and Popsicles

by Kerri Aldrich on July 25th, 2006

Ben & Jerry's Phish Food Ice Cream , Frozen Food, 16 fl oz Ben & Jerry's Phish Food Frozen Yogurt, 16 fl oz

This week’s Same Toys, Different Continents (Kerri in italics) is all about ice cream, popsicles, frozen yogurt, and other frozen desserts. My son and his classmates at nursery school enjoyed quite a few at their end-of-the-year party today. And as far as I could tell, the more artificial the taste and color, the better.

Haagen Dazs and Ben & Jerry’s are my preferred ice cream brands of choice with my favorite flavors being Dulce de Leche and Cherry Garcia, respectively. For the purposes of this post, I also tried Phish Food for the first time (see the sacrifices I go to for you readers?). Personally, I think Rocky Road is better because it has nuts.

After a few licks of his Phish Food cone, my son said, “Yuck. Toooooo sweet.” (My husband said, “Yuck. Toooooo expensive!” :P These brands cost twice as much in the UK.) Strawberry Cornetto, and strawberry Nestle Fab ice lollies, basically anything strawberry or pink is more his style.

Mmmm….Phish Food. Haven’t found the frozen yogurt variety, yet. Cherry Garcia is right up there, too. My kids love the Chunky Monkey that they had at Titi’s (grandma’s) the other day. (Titi’s favorite is Pistachio Pistachio. She’s a nut. heehee) Give me plain ole Haagen Dazs Chocolate! Or Rocky Road. Yum. Even the Healthy Choice version is pretty good, if you’re counting calories and want more than a tablespoon of the good stuff.

My kids are the same, though. Their favorites are the Fla-Vor-Ice that I grew up with, or any popsicle shaped like a crayon. Or anything from the ice cream man in the ice cream truck. (Do you all have these guys driving around in the vans with the irritating music 2-3 times a day? Great for explaining the Doppler Effect, but annoying when to have to tell the kids “no, no ice cream, again” 3 times a day.)

Ice Tups SetTo avoid buying synthetic supermarket ice lollies too often, a simple popsicle mold will do the trick. These Tupperware molds are what I remember my mom using when we were kids. Almost any drink makes delicious popsicles. Our favorites are made of strawberry smoothie or yogurt. Hope a popsicle or two will help cool your family down during the heat of summer!

I like the term “ice lollies.” Might have to make it popular here. :) Stay cool, everyone!
