Keeping the Star Wars Franchise Alive
This vacation, my husband has been busy collecting these Star Wars Titanium Series spacecrafts. We have looked high and lo in many Walmart, Target, and Toys R Us stores. And I know he’s not the only one who’s still collecting Star Wars crap stuff.
Experts say “Star Wars” goods have shown surprising strength this year despite the absence of a new movie — even beating merchandise from summer flicks such as “Cars,” “Superman Returns” and “Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest.” “Star Wars” is the top seller so far this year of action figures and the biggest merchandiser for boys’ toys, according to market-research firm NPD Group of Port Washington, N.Y. Lucasfilm’s head of licensing, Howard Roffman, says it is selling more than double its nearest movie-merchandise competitor this summer, “Cars.”
Here’s what else is planned for Star Wars fans:
- A video game based on that unexploited time in the “Star Wars” continuum
- More comics and novels including a nine-novel series that follows Luke Skywalker, Princess Leia and other main characters 25 years after “Star Wars: Episode VI — Return of the Jedi”
- A children’s television animated series set during the heyday of the Jedi world, between “Star Wars: Episode II — Attack of the Clones” and “Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith
- More toys, action figures, etc. based on all of the above
With my son joining in, I think my house will soon be overrun by Star Wars paraphernalia. Time to nip it in the bud…yeah, riiiiight.
