Fisher Price Loving Family Doll House
My daughter received the Fisher Price Loving Family Doll House for Christmas last year and loves it! Her almost 3 year old brother loves to play with it, too, much to her dismay. I must say, I was pretty impressed by the details in some of the pieces.
It’s one of the many cool toys that we have around the house that the kids love, but never knew they actually wanted until they had it. As I started to look around the house, I realized that there are very few toys that we own because the kids saw an ad for the toy and asked for it. I wonder if it’s because most of the TV that they watch is on PBS, and they, therefore, don’t see many ads for toys. They’ve also never attended preschool or daycare, and are only exposed to their friends’ toys. I wonder if that’s kept the “I wants” at bay in our home, not that we don’t hear it at all!
Honestly, almost all of our toys are gifts or excellent condition hand-me-downs from friends. And it’s not that we wouldn’t buy toys for our kids if we thought they needed them. Between the gifts and the second-hand toys, we don’t have any room for anymore!
What about you? How are most of the toys in your home acquired? Take our poll in the right sidebar to let us know! Thanks.

Hurrah for PBS! I could do without the *really boring* ag reports, and the droning news stuff, and what’s with the Lawrence Welk re-runs? The lady who does the Creative Life sucks my soul and sends me to sleep, and the interesting shows only seem to repeat a handful of episodes. So, yeah, except for a few programs that I like, clearly the worth of PBS in our house is the children’s programming. Our kids love it- all summer they’ve gotten to watch Thomas the Engine, and Caillou, and Cyber Chase, and of course Sesame Street. Among others.
Anyhow, most of the toys in our house are handed down toys, or gifts. Of the ones we’ve purchased for them, it’s a close split between new-from-the-store toys, and second-hand toys (yard sales, thrift shops, etc). I’m ultra-picky about second-hand toys though, and look for things that have all their parts & pieces, blink their blinky lights, and don’t look “used”. A little wear & tear is one thing, and to be expected.
Now books? Most of our books we’ve bought. Some brand new, many second-hand. The “friends of the library” group does a fund-raiser book sale at least once a year, and you can get books in all genres and magazines for dirt cheap. :D When a kids’ book is 25 cents, who cares if the cover is a bit torn, or a page has been colored on? Especially when my sweet darling children are likely to tear or color their books anyway.
hm. I seem to be going on a bit- must need another cup of coffee this morning. heh

Cyberchase is a favorite here, too, as well as most others! I like History Detectives, for myself, when I remember to watch it. But if I’m thinking of the same lady you are on that crafty show, Oh My Gosh. Not only boring, but most of the stuff I’ve seen her make wasn’t something I’d have been proud to spend my time creating or displaying! I’ll have to look and see if it’s the same lady.
Love the hand-me-down toys. And though I’m not particular about pieces, most of my friends who are doing the handing down are, so you’d never know they weren’t new.
Mmmm….more coffee. Sounds good. :D

[…] Kerri has been talking about her family’s Fisher Price Loving Family Dollhouse but I found a dollhouse that I bet nobody has. The Rainey family of Tennessee have a mouse dollhouse that has been passed down for three generations. The Decatur Daily has a delightful story about the mouse dollhouse and its caring owners. […]
