Tips for Playing with Pin Art
At the Exploratorium museum of science in San Francisco, there used to be a huge pinscreen exhibit that was very popular (I think it’s still there). My son got his first pin art toy yesterday but we discovered that pressing into the pinscreen is not as easy or effective as letting the pins slide down over the object instead. Here’s the best way to create your 3D pin art sculpture.
- Allow ALL the pins to slide into the compartment where the scupture will eventually be.
- Place your object on the flat back of the pin art screen.
- Invert the pinscreen so that all the pins slide back and over your object. Your object will block the pins from coming back out and create the sculpture in the compartment.
- Bring the pinscreen upright carefully so the pins don’t go out of alignment and place on a flat surface.
- Remove your object carefully from the back of the pinscreen.
Voila! We’ve been having loads of fun creating pin sculptures out of our faces, hands, and various superheros. The sculptures are surprisingly detailed! Check out this scupture we made using C-3PO (click for a larger picture).

My daughter loves playing with her cousin’s pin toy. She does get frustrated when the pins all move around. Thanks for the tip and for submitting this to the Carnival of Family Life!

Isn’t it funny how something so simple can make something work so much easier/better? I’m pretty sure that there’s a major “life lesson” here in your upside-down pinart toy!
