Robot Man Paper Model Kit

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on January 21st, 2007

Earlier this week, I wrote about paper animation kits from Flying Pig. I order them on Tuesday and they arrived on Saturday and today, Sunday, I’ve already put together the Robot Man kit. Here are step-by-step pictures.

The kit comes as a little booklet with punch out pieces. You can see my son already itching to get his hands on it.

Here are the two robot legs, a bottle of PVA craft glue, and my red glue spatula. It’s important to have some sort of applicator to spread the very tacky glue. A lollipop stick would also work well.

The box constructed with the legs inserted. So far so good although my fingers are getting covered in glue. The directions for the kit are fairly easy to understand and each piece is clearly labeled. Definitely requires concentration, though. I can’t imagine any child younger than 10 being able to put this together on their own.

The box is assembled and the robot feet attached.

Here you can see the body in front of the box and the two arms with hands. The arms plus hands were each a total of five small pieces.

The arms have now been attached to the main body and the robot head assembled. The neck stymied me for a moment because I didn’t realize you had to roll it and stick it in the neck hole before the head is fully assembled. The crank shaft has also been put together and my son has stuck it in prematurely.

The robot head has been attached to the main body. I used a bit of tape to attach it more securely. I was also unable to assemble the antenna that’s supposed to stick out of its head because I didn’t roll the pole tight enough for it to fit.

Ta da! The fully assembled robot man with paper clip coming out of its head. Turn the handle and he walks with arms moving. Definitely worth the effort although I had to keep swatting my son away because he kept wanting to play with the pieces before they dried. He was very encouraging while I was gluing away, “Good work, Mama! You’re doing a good job concentrating. I will give you a sticker when you’re finished.”
