Toy Talk: Children Using Computers

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on February 11th, 2007

As I sit here at the dining table in front of my laptop, my son is sitting next to me busy on the Cbeebies website. Tris Hussey of Homely Scientist also has his kids set-up on a computer of their own and shares his thoughts on kids and computers.

…both kids are supervised when on the computer, especially with sites like Club Penguin and Webkins (A has tried to get me into Club Penguin, but I’m not taking to it). So for me I think it’s very important that both kids are very comfortable with computers. Not just mouse and keyboard skills, but things like passwords, problem solving, troubleshooting. Yes, I’m raising my kids to be geeks.

Who else is raising their kids to be geeks? Raise your hand in the comments.

My 1 year old daughter loves to bang on the keys and loves our cellphones and anything with buttons on it. She likes to play with the mouse and is fascinated by the things on the screen. I have tried babykeys and similar bang on keys and make sounds programs… Are there any other programs out there for 1 year olds?

Three geeks here! Our kids have their own networked “office” complete with kid-sized office chairs. Their office is in the playroom which is in full view of my office.

My kids are total Virtual Magic Kingdom fans. But they are very comfortable doing word processing, power point presentations and email.

You can see their office before we added the third computer at:

Anonymous: Hi and thank you for your comment. Toddlers are a hard bunch computer-wise. Here are some online games that your daughter might enjoy:

    1. Fisher Price
    2. Teletubbies at CBeebies
    3. Knee Bouncers

    Have fun!

Char: Wow! Your kids are lucky!!! Talk about living in the future. :) I haven’t even got a proper set-up for myself. Gah.

If our kids used the computer as much as they wanted, they would have carpal tunnel already. They are just starting to get used to actually using a real keyboard and are fascinated to type their name and see it show up on the screen. Our son likes to type the numbers 1-10, too.

I’m thinking they will probably start handling our Microsoft Money by their next birthday.
