Sandy the Starfish Helps Your Child Endure Hospital Procedures

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on March 26th, 2007

My Bath Buddy, Sandy Starfish (Bath Buddies)Facing a hospital visit with your child where you know that a blood stick and other unpleasantries will need to take place? Perhaps Sandy the Starfish, a lift-the-flap book by Laura Young, can help prepare both of you.

For my son, fear of the unknown is usually what overwhelms him. As he understands more about how his body functions and how medicine works to help his body heal or be more comfortable during fevers (he’s never had anything stronger than acetaminophen, fortunately), he cooperates better with less fuss. And he’s never made a big deal out of scratches, cuts, or bruises because he understands that his body will heal them with the help of macrophages and platelets. It does help sometimes to have a scientist for a mother! ;)

In addition to an order form for the book, there are also delightful coloring pages and a matching game children can play with Sandy the Starfish. May your next visit to the doctor’s be a peaceful one.
