Milestone: First Bike

by Hsien-Hsien Lei on March 31st, 2007

Milestone day! My son got his first two-wheel bike. It’s a 14″ Whomp Bike from Toys R Us UK. Totally overpriced at £69.99 ($140) but still cheaper than the local bike shop. (Frustrating) assembly required. The brakes were totally off kilter and for some reason, neither my husband nor I were able to figure it out so we drove to the local bike shop where the guy helped us out. THANK YOU!!

There’s only one problem. Looks like I better get some jogging shoes. He’s going to be speeding to and from school, leaving me in the dust. What a big step away from having had to carry him in the sling just a few short months ago. My baby’s growing up!

Cool bike! It’s his first real set of wheels and independence.

We just gave the kids their first bikes today. We had two wipe outs in less than two minutes. They seem to be getting the hang of it though.

We bought 2 16″ bikes from Toys R Us for about the same price assembled. What’s going on over there with the prices?

Kerri: It was a great weekend!

Char: Take back the comment about “independence.” :P

Mike: We had one wipe-out but he seemed oblivious. lol I try to instill the “suck it up and move on” mentality. London prices are notoriously expensive. When I was at London Toy Fair, the manufacturer told me they love to sell toys in London because the base price is always twice that in the US. Some of the reasons are given over at New Economist but they include higher wages and higher sales tax. You do get used to the prices, though. Sticker shock wears off after a while.

Pass the Torch: Now I got get myself decked out! Was thinking roller blades but perhaps I shouldn’t aim so high. hehee

Congratulations on the milestone! How exciting! My husband used to jog alongside my kids while they were biking, but now they’re too fast for him to catch up…. :)

    Warmly,

Hueina: Hi there! It’s great exercise chasing him and I’m really looking forward to riding alongside him someday. :)
