Boonshoft Museum of Discovery

by Kerri Aldrich on April 25th, 2007

bmdpl3.jpgWhile the spring weather that we’ve been experiencing is a welcome change from the cold, the season brings with it frequent thunderstorms and days that still require indoor play! One of the kids’ favorite places to spend a day indoors is The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery.

Boonshoft has so many different things for the kids to do that I feel like we only scratch the surface of all that there is each time we visit. From the animal hospital (with real X-rays and everything!), to the courtroom/jailhouse, tobmdpl1.jpg the landfill and nearby recycling center, every corner of the museum is designed with the entertainment and education of children in mind.

Some of my kids’ favorite stops at the museum include: the fossil digging pit, the log cabin with furniture just their sizes, the water play area (no swimwear required), the body shop (which I believe was revamped by a local body shop), the grocery store (with little carts and cash registers and all!), and…well…everything, really.

bmdpl2.jpgAnother big exhibit is the Wild Ohio section, which features animals native to our area. There are some playful otters, a coyote, turtles, squirrels, owls, snakes, foxes, and more that endure the ogling eyes of our little ones.

I’m thankful for places like this in our city where we can take our kids. The admission isn’t cheap for a one-time visit, but a yearly family membership is really reasonable. And the membership also gives us discounts at other museums and zoos. We’ve also found out a few of our friends have memberships now, too, so it’ll be a good place to meet up during the next stormy week!

What are your favorite fun and educational spots like this in your towns and cities?
