Nostalgia Toy #8: Slinky

by Kerri Aldrich on July 13th, 2007

The first SLINKY I remember being in our home was a big, dual-colored (yellow and orange) plastic one that my sister had. I think that was the first plastic Slinky I’d ever seen. We found out that you could sit in the back of our vehicle and peg the person in the front quite easily with that Slinky, and it didn’t make that annoying metallic sound that the original Slinky made.

How did we find out, you ask? Why, through a serious of complex mathematical equations, of course. You don’t think we would actually try it, did you? ;)

The bad news, though, was that the plastic Slinky was just as susceptible as the metals ones to getting a kink in it and becoming completely useless. It wasn’t even good for pegging a sibling anymore, or, so our calculations predicted. :)

AM New York posted an article listing many of the low-tech toys of the Baby Boomers, including the Slinky, that are still keeping the interests of the high-tech kids of today. Very fun list!
