Movie Making for Kids

by Kerri Aldrich on August 19th, 2007

Oh man! I’ve spent this whole weekend on the set of a short film for which a good friend of mine is a producer. We’ve spent the last few weeks doing casting calls and prepping for everyone who’s coming in for the filming, and all this weekend has been shooting the film. I’ve been able to do some photography for it, baking for a few scenes, helping the art director (another good friend), and generally just being there when needed. And it has been SO FUN! I’ve learned a ton watching the whole process, and feel like I’ve had the opportunity to take a hands on course in film making. I never imagined I’d get to do something like this, and it has been amazing.

One of the crew members there is a kid who has been trying out some stop-action Lego films on his own and who is getting a major hands-on lesson in film-making. Watching him there made me wonder what kinds of resources there are out there for kids are wanting to explore that avenue of creativity. The accessibility of video cameras in general has changed so much over the last few decades, and the ease of use (how many of your digital cameras out there just come with video capability!?!) has to have allowed for kids to experiment with this genre of artistic expression in a way unimaginable just a generation ago.

Here is a site that I found that offers some insight and direction for kids who might be interested in movie making.

Do you have other sites or resources that you think would be valuable for kids who are starting out in film?
