This toy bugs me…

by Kerri Aldrich on September 19th, 2007

heehee. Did you get it? Corny, sorry. :P

For about the past month, my middle child has been asking daily for the countdown until his birthday (we’re still well in the 30s, I believe). Recently, when his dad asked him what he might want for his birthday, one of his answers was, “A telescope…..a bug telescope.” I’m guessing he meant microscope, and I’m wondering if something like the toy pictured here would do the trick.

I’d say that I wasn’t prepared for boys and the whole bug thing, but the truth is that the bughousepl.jpg most bug-crazy child we know is a little girl. She’s a good friend of my daughter’s and will happily run around gathering bugs in a princess dress. For awhile, she seemed inseparable from her bug house. My kids thought it was one of the coolest things ever. Maybe it’s time for a bug house in our family. As long as their are no spiders or roaches involved. EVER. ewwww….

I got it! I had an idea you might do that. Anyway, thankfully my son would never want a bug house he’s scared of almost all buggy type things. He has grown butterflies and enjoys that. But bugs — never. I don’t mind any bugs but I hate spiders more than anything on earth. In New Mexico you don’t see spiders too often (I think because it’s either too hot or too cold — they stay hidden) but now I’m back in the NW and seriously I’m being stalked by spiders!

It’s very scary how they’re everywhere here. Hey, you know you might like a post I did at Offbeat Homes (50 great architect toys) that’s playful. It turned out pretty good though. And not a spider in the list!

Oh, one more thing — I hope you never move to New Mexico because the cockroaches are everywhere. They don’t bug me (ha) but my ex was terrified of them and wanted me to stomp them which is basically like stomping a small dog they’re so huge so I had to catch them and set them free outside. But at night in Albuquerque in the summer you can’t walk outside without seeing 100s. So yeah, don’t move to Albuquerque. Ok before I write a bug book I should just stop.

My DS is into bugs too but…they live outside! We take our magnifying glasses, bug catchers, etc. etc. outside to play and carefully leave them there when we are done looking at them…we don’t want to upset the ecosystem…as my DS will solemnly tell you!

To clarify the birthday request: He wants a telescope AND a bug telescope, and the bug telescope is NOT a microscope. Three year olds can be SO particular. :)

Jennifer: Ewww…roaches. I remember the first time I saw roaches in Florida. The were huge! Nasty. Spiders, too. Blech. :)

TNQCP: Good idea, to leave them where they belong! I like that idea. :)

Bald Man: Yes, he can! :P
