Monopoly Minus the Money
One of Bald Man’s least favorite commercials depicts some type of fast retail environment (there are variations on the scene) where customers are quickly making their way through the checkout lane by making their purchases via a credit/debit card swipe. Everything is moving so smoothly until, oh my gosh how dare he, a customer actually brings a halt to it all by having the nerve to present the teller with…..wait for it…..CASH.
That’s all I could think of today when I saw the commercial for the latest rebirth of Monopoly…Monopoly Electronic Banking Edition. Yup, Monopoly without the money. All of the trades and such are made with debit-type banking cards. What is Monopoly without the money?!? Of course, I seem to only ever remember actually finishing one game of Monopoly. I guess it won’t effect my life all that much. ;)
What about you? Do you think Monopoly is the same without the cash?

This new version of Monopoly is similar to a few other products out there which encourage kids to learn how to swipe a credit card-like plastic thing and avoid “paying with cash.” (See Barbie’s “Fashion Fever”: http://barbie.everythinggirl.com/catalog/productbrd.aspx?product_id=2000841&subcat_id=210061)
Kids, especially the younger ones, may not understand that by swiping a credit card, you’re still spending money … and it’s concerning to see a new trend in toys leaning in this direction, teaching children that credit cards are “fun” and how to swipe them.

Ashley: One of the benefits of the game, at least as it was marketed on Amazon, is to teach kids the relationships between the cards they see and actual cash. I’m not sure exactly how well that will work, considering the fact that so many adults still haven’t made that connection. I think it’s all about the fun of swiping.

Younger kids? Most teens, college students and even adults fail to grasp the reality of that connection. Perhaps the Luddites were onto something… :{
