One Book Two Book Talks About a Controversial Kids Book

by Julie on January 2nd, 2008

rainbowfishbook.jpgHave you heard of the book The Rainbow Fish? I have and we own a copy. I’ve read it to my children many times.

Kelly over at One Book Two Book, was browsing at Amazon looking at the reviews of this book and you have to go read what she found. This book has sparked a lot of controversy. Are you curious yet? I know I was.

Head on over and read her post: Rainbow Fish Makes a Comeback at Our House. The comments blew me away!

Wow! And to think I intentionally used that book with 4th and 5th graders as part of my Oceanography unit, with the intention of reinforcing sharing and taking other people’s feeling into account. Bad me, eh??? LOL!!!

Hi! I just posted this comment at Kelly’s:
Great post! I have to get our copy and reread it. Sadly, our copy is quite old and looks brand new. My 3 children were never interested in it. Their grandmother gave it to them. I read somewhere that grandparents/gift books were a big part of sales.
I LOVE that you are giving the girls art presents. My blog is titled ‘Got Art’. I just launched Got-ToysandGames.com where I love to review art toys. Soon, I will be launching Got-Art.com which will have a large selection for Kid Art books and reviews. Now I have to find our Rainbow Fish copy!

@Dirty Butter: I thought it was a good book. Just a book about a cute fish. Who knew it could be so controversial? :)

@Anna: I love the name of your new website. We are big into art and games at my house too. :)

I blogged some anti-Rainbow Fish comments a while back (click my name). The first book is beautiful, but when you stop to think about it, the core message is that you can buy your friends. I talk about stories with my daughter, and unfortunately we end up talking about how bad Rainbow Fish is in the story.

But, Rainbow Fish redeems himself by the third book (Rainbow Fish and the Big Blue Whale).

@AJ - I’ve never heard of the third book. I’ll have to check that one out.
